"Hello everyone, I hope all is well with this community.
I’m reaching out because my brother, who was 39, passed away about seven months ago. He used to have seizures, and unfortunately, he hurt himself several times during these episodes—like the time he broke and dislocated his shoulders, or when he wandered out barefoot at night without knowing where he was going. Tragically, his last seizure took his life, and we’re still in shock.
I don’t want to make this too long, so I’ll get to the point. My brother had Bitcoin, though I don’t know how much. He owned three hardware wallets called Jade and two called Ledger. I’ve been researching this for a couple of months now.
I believe he might have shared the passcode or PIN with his girlfriend, but she’s not willing to give it to us. She claims he only told her that he had Bitcoin and was waiting for it to reach $100k so they could buy a house together.
Now that he’s gone, I have access to his wallets, but I don’t have the passcodes or the secret phrases needed to access the Bitcoin. He lived with our parents and once tried to teach me how to access the wallets in case something happened to him. Unfortunately, we never got around to it.
So, I have a couple of questions:
1. If I somehow find the secret words (seed phrases), will I still need the device passcodes to access the Bitcoins? 2. What should I be looking for, specifically with the Jade and Ledger devices I mentioned? Is the secret phrase something people usually write down and hide? I’m hoping to search for it and have some ideas, but I could be wrong.
Sadly, his iPhone and laptops are also locked, and we don’t know the passcodes for those either. He owned three gaming laptops (though he never gamed, he likely used them for Bitcoin transactions) and a MacBook Pro, which he used daily.
My main question is: What are my chances of accessing those Bitcoins if I can’t find the secret words or passcodes to his wallets?"
EDIT: i got some very nice information and also as always some spams and "stealing theory" I just need to mention that there are 3 Jade wallets which on back of them its written 1 2 and 3. the 2 other ledgers have nothing on them, i will share a pic if it helps. Does it make any sense to have so many hardware wallets? What would be the reaosn for it?
